In a twist of events, what initially sparked fears of a potential security threat in the dense forests of Bolkinggre, East Garo Hills, turned out to be a rather unexpected discovery. A combing operation was set in motion after reports of a parachute descending from the sky with a mysterious payload surfaced. The plot thickened, and intrigue heightened as authorities were summoned to investigate.
The drama unfolded when the police anti-insurgency operation camp at Bolkinggre received an alert on January 30 around 9:00 pm. The report suggested the discovery of a suspicious object or device in Asiragre village under Williamnagar PS. With caution in the air, a specialised police team, including bomb disposal experts, was swiftly dispatched to the site.
Adding an element of suspense, the area, once notorious for militant activity, had witnessed the recovery of multiple explosive devices and weapons in the past. The stage was set for a potentially tense situation.
Upon further inquiry, it was revealed that on January 29, 2024, at approximately 6:30 pm, Silnang R. Marak, a villager from Asiragre, stumbled upon a peculiar device labelled “meteomodem PS-20 made in France.” Intriguingly, this contraption was accompanied by a red parachute, adding a touch of intrigue to the unfolding mystery. The device had found its way into Silnang’s garden and, subsequently, his house.
The investigative twist came when authorities seized and examined the PS-20 item, only to identify it as a GPS sonde specifically designed for measuring wind currents in the atmosphere. The parachute, which initially raised eyebrows, turned out to be an unconventional accessory for a weather instrument.
In response to the discovery, East Garo Hills police reassured villagers not to succumb to panic.
