SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, Ernest Mawrie on January 19 said that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal has failed entirely.

“There is no development in West Bengal and in the Panchayat election there, BJP will win all the seats,” Mawrie claimed during a press conference.

He said West Bengal is a failure in terms of law and order, even as he said that it is the most corrupt state.

“How did they come up with the WE card and MYE card here? It is just lip service,” the state BJP chief said.

Mawrie also said that if TMC chairperson and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee can really provide those in West Bengal, she should give an example of her state.

“But we have collected the information and report and it turned out to be a total failure. There is no development in West Bengal and law and order too is deteriorating, “he said.

The state BJP chief also requested and appealed to the people of the state to give BJP a chance if one wants development, peace and youths to have jobs.

Mawrie also said that although his party is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) it was not running the government.

When asked on the Congress’ claim on BJP being equally responsible for scams and corruption committed by the MDA government, Mawrie said, “The chief minister and all the ministers were from their side. We always said that we have zero tolerance against corruption,” the state BJP unit president responded.

He also reiterated that the decision to pull out from the government is in the central BJP leaders’ court and the issue has been discussed with them on several occasions.

Mawrie pointed out that the NPP is not the BJP’s partner only in Meghalaya but that they are in the National Democratic Alliance together too.

He also informed that as per assessment, the party will win 10-15 seats in the upcoming Assembly election.

Mawrie said that this assessment was done by the party as well as independent agencies.

According to him, the party expects seats from Shillong and Tura cities, the plain belts of Garo Hills, Ri Bhoi and Jaintia Hills.

Mawrie also informed that the BJP will put up candidates in all the 60 seats even as he informed that the list will be announced soon adding that there are 123 aspirants for the party ticket in Meghalaya.

In Dalu there are four aspirants while in Mahendraganj there are six contenders for the party ticket, he said.

Mawrie said that the state election committee meeting will be soon convened where all the names of the aspirants will be sent to the central parliamentary committee for its approval.

Asked how many seats the party is targeting to win, Mawrie said that the BJP too is expecting to win more than what they have projected.

“But we are in line with the survey. We will not go just for a press report. We are working on the ground so whatever report I have tabled in the central executive committee meeting is the fact,” the state BJP president said.
