Toi affair: All’s well with women’s panel

The issue came up after there were allegations that the Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women, Phidalia Toi, violated the model code of conduct by participating in a recent election rally of the National People’s Party legislator from Jowai, WailadmikiShylla.

SHILLONG:

The state government, in an order issued on February 16, cancelled the denotification order of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women.

It may be recalled that the Social Welfare department on February 14 had stated that the term of the Commission stood denotified with effect from January 18, 2023.

The issue came up after there were allegations that the Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women, Phidalia Toi, violated the model code of conduct by participating in a recent election rally of the National People’s Party legislator from Jowai, Wailadmiki Shylla.

Subsequently, the Election Commission had issued show-cause notice to Toi.

A source told The Meghalayan, “The denotification order was cancelled so that the Commission could function as usual.”

At present, the Commission is functioning without a chairperson, though it still has a vice-chairperson and other members.

“Work is on as usual,” an official said.

The denotification order of the Commission came as a surprise to many. However, it did not take long for the department to issue a notification to cancel the denotification order.

Meanwhile, another official said that Toi has written to the government which was not accepted. The official said, “There is no proposal for finding replacement.”

There were hopes that an appointment would be made or Toi might return.
