Trinamool hits campaign with Zenith while Saleng pulls away 2 AITC leaders

Tura, March 16: Hoping to turn the tables on their arch rivals NPP, buoyant by the large turnout of supporters to the launch of their campaign in Tura, the All India Trinamool Congress candidate Zenith M Sangma believes the time has come to snatch victory.

“I express my gratitude to the TMC leadership for entrusting me to run in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the 2-Tura LS Parliamentary constituency. United in purpose, we are committed to victory, offering the people of Garo Hills the change they seek,” stated Zenith Sangma on his facebook handle.

The AITC, commonly called TMC, held a large party meeting in its office in Tentengkol, Tura on Thursday that had the presence of party workers and leaders from different parts of Garo Hills.

“We convened with leaders from various assembly constituencies to deliberate and devise strategies to overcome any obstacles during our campaign,” the TMC candidate stated.

The Trinamool has chosen Zenith, younger brother of former chief minister Mukul Sangma, as their party candidate to take on Agatha K Sangma of the NPP and Saleng A Sangma of the Congress.

Zenith lost the last assembly elections from Rangsakona constituency in 2023.

Even as the Trinamool prepares to battle it out with their main opponent NPP, another rival- Congress has quietly lured away two of its former leaders.

While former TMC legislator from Chokpot constituency, Lazarus M Sangma, joined the Congress on Thursday, another TMC leader from Siju-Rongara constituency of South Garo Hills, Dr Rajesh Marak and his supporters merged with the Congress on Friday. He was the TMC candidate in last year’s assembly elections.

The TMC leader was received by Congress working president Deborah C Marak and party candidate for Tura seat Saleng A Sangma.

As the election campaign heats up in the coming days, more defections and change of parties by leaders and supporters are expected across the political spectrum.
