Tripura govt makes face masks mandatory after spike in Covid cases

AGARTALA:

Amidst the growing number of Covid-19 cases in Tripura, the state government has directed the public to compulsorily wear face mask and follow all Covid appropriate behaviours.

Addressing media persons, Additional Secretary Tripura Revenue Department, Pradip Acharjee, said that Chief Secretary JK Sinha held a state level task force meeting and decided to issue fresh curbs.

“The meeting decided to make wearing mask mandatory, and conduct mass testing at crowded places for early detection,” Acharjee said.

State Disease Surveillance Officer Dr Deep Kumar Debbarma said that the state recorded a positivity rate of 7.12 percent on July 10 from 1.79 percent on July 4, which is a sharp increase.

“In West District most cases have been reported from areas falling under Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). At least 131 Covid positive cases were detected in last one week and among them 82 are from West District,” he said.

He said that out of the 131 cases, only eight persons are hospitalised, and 37 people who had tested positive for the virus are untraceable, and the health department is trying to trace them.

The officials further informed that the Chief Secretary will write a letter to the Central government seeking relaxations for the booster dose for 18 years and above eligible population.

Meanwhile, Senior virologist and head of AGMC virology lab Tapan Majumder, described the fresh spike of cases as an early signal of a fourth wave.
