Tripura tops list of deaths due to medical negligence in NE

The report was published in a new edition of 'Crime in India' for crime-related statistics in 2021.

AGARTALA:

An annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which was released on August 29, has shown that Tripura is at the top of the list when it comes to death due to medical negligence from among the North-eastern states.

The report, which was published in a new edition of ‘Crime in India’ for crime-related statistics in 2021, cited under ‘death due to medical negligence’ two incidents from Tripura, and one each from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and none from the rest of the North-eastern states.

Where dowry deaths were concerned, Assam topped the list while Tripura came in second. In Assam, 198 cases of dowry deaths were registered, in Tripura – 22, and in Manipur – two while the rest of the North-eastern states recorded zero cases.

When it comes to murder, the 2021 data showed Assam registered 1192 cases out of which 1269 people were victims, Tripura registered 122 incidents of which 130 people were victims, and Arunachal Pradesh registered 49 incidents with 54 victims. Manipur registered 46, Meghalaya 80, Mizoram 24, Nagaland 27 while Sikkim registered 14. In the attempt to commit murder section, Tripura again came second with 137 incidents in which 169 were victims.

In the section crimes against senior citizens, Tripura came second with four incidents after Assam which registered five incidents, while Manipur and Mizoram registered one each, and Sikkim registered two. Under the same section, data showed Tripura Police arrested seven persons (male).

A total of 1,955 cases of murder were registered during 2021, showing an increase of 5.7 per cent from 2020 (1,849 cases) in the country. The crime rate registered also shows an increase from 1.6 in 2020 to 1.7 in 2021.
