Tripura tops list of political violence in Northeast: NCRB report

Tripura topped the list for attacks on police personnel with 11 such incidents, whereas Assam recorded 10 cases, and Manipur 7.

AGARTALA:

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its annual crime in India report, released on August 29, revealed that Tripura tops the list of political violence in the Northeast region.

The report said that a total of 4,577 cases of offenses against public tranquillity were registered under various sections of IPC during 2021 across the country, of which Unlawful Assembly cases were 2,191 accounting for 47.9 per cent of total such cases. The cases of offenses registered against public tranquillity have increased by 3.2 per cent in 2021 over 2020.

In the section of offenses against public tranquility, the NCRB  said that in the unlawful assembly in the Northeast region, Tripura and Manipur recorded one incident each, while Assam recorded 1292 incidents, with other Northeast states reporting zero cases.

When it came to riots, Arunachal Pradesh recorded six incidents with six victims, Assam recorded 780 incidents with 1498 victims, Meghalaya and Nagaland registered one each, Manipur recorded 60 cases, Tripura recorded 117 with 259 victims, while Sikkim and Mizoram registered zero cases.

In terms of political riots, Manipur reported two cases with eight victims, Tripura reported 64 cases with 136 victims, while other Northeastern states reported zero cases.

Tripura topped the list for attacks on police personnel with 11 such incidents, whereas Assam recorded 10 cases, and Manipur 7.

The Crime in India 2020 report revealed that Tripura registered around 22 cases of political conflicts.

Referring to the report, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state committee secretary Jitendra Chowdhury said that this report is a direct slap to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president.

“The report is a direct slap on the BJP and its president JP Nadda. What Nadda claimed at a press conference stating that political violence has decreased in Tripura is a blatant lie, just like Sunil Deodhar claiming youths will get jobs just by giving a miss call.”

Likewise, chairman of Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance(TIPRA) Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said, “It’s sad. It’s a culture which I have tried to fight against but I find it extremely frustrating because it is now in the DNA of Tripura to use in politics irrespective of parties to intimidate the opponents.”

Congress MLA and former Minister Sudip Roy Barman said, “These reports prove that BJP is a party of liars.”

When contacted, BJP spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty said that he has not gone through the report, and will not comment anything on it without knowing the facts and figures.
