Truth has prevailed: Ronnie hails SC order on Rahul Gandhi’s defamation case

“Finally, truth has prevailed; justice has been delivered; democracy has won and the Constitution has been upheld,” Lyngdoh said.

SHILLONG:

Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and Mylliem MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh, on August 5, hailed the order of the Supreme Court that stayed the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi.

“Finally, truth has prevailed; justice has been delivered; democracy has won and the Constitution has been upheld,” Lyngdoh said, on the sidelines of a silent rally held at Laitumkhrah today to pray for peace in violence-hit Manipur.

The Supreme Court on August 4 stayed the conviction of Congress leader and former Member of Parliament (MP) Rahul Gandhi in the criminal defamation case over the “why all thieves have Modi surname” remark. With the stay of his conviction, Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as MP also now remains in abeyance.

Stating that the order passed by the judiciary in Gujarat had left much room for speculations, the Congress leader said the way the case was handled by the judiciary in Gujarat was questionable and that even the highest court in the country noticed it.

“For the people of India, this has come as something to be happy about; we now know that there is still the judiciary to protect the justice of the citizens,” he said.

Maintaining that this is not the victory of one individual (Rahul Gandhi), Lyngdoh said, this is about the citizens of the country; this is a victory of not only one man but of the whole country.

Stating that many institutions in the country have been subverted and compromised, Lyngdoh said, “Now I think, we still have hope in the apex court; we still believe that India is the biggest democracy. Earlier, we were afraid thinking that even the court has been subverted but this is comforting news.”
