Two arrested for lynching youth in Tripura

The accused, identified as Sentu Debnath (40) and Amal Chandra Das (50), lynched Litan Mia (26) at Baramura village.

AGARTALA:

Tripura police arrested two persons for allegedly mob lynching a 26-year-old youth to death on suspicion of being a cattle lifter, on March 29.

The accused, identified as Sentu Debnath (40) and Amal Chandra Das (50), lynched Litan Mia (26) at Baramura village under the Jatrapur police station of Tripura’s Sepahijala district early morning on Tuesday, the police said.

Speaking to The Meghalayan, officer-in-charge of Jatrapur police station Nandan Das said, “When we found him at the village, he was in a critical condition. We rushed him to a local hospital and informed his family members. Later, when his condition started deteriorating, he was referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala but before reaching the hospital he succumbed to his injuries.”

Earlier, the police had rushed to Baramura after receiving information that the villagers have detained and thrashed a person for “stealing” cattle.

“The boy, hailing from Dhanpur village, was still alive when found by the police, but his condition worsened afterwards leading to his death,” added Das.

Following the incident, hundreds of locals blocked the road at Dhanpur demanding the immediate arrest of the prepetrators.

Later the victim’s father Jamal Miah lodged a complaint after which Debnath and Das were arrested. The police said hunt for others involved in the lynching in on.

Meanwhile, family members of the victim alleged that Litan’s lynching was pre-planned.
