Two leopard cubs born at Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

AGARTALA:

The in-situ conservation and breeding programme to conserve endangered clouded leopards in Tripura has borne good results as two new cubs were born at the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary on August 4.

Speaking to the press, a forest official said that after a long time two leopard cubs – a male and a female – were born in healthy condition, and were handed over to zoo authorities.

“The in-situ breeding program was first undertaken in the year 2010. Since then, we have been trying to create a conducive atmosphere for breeding big cats. This year finally we achieved success as two new cubs were born,” District Forest Officer, Sepahijala, Pritam Bhattacharjee said.

He further informed that with the new births, the total number of leopards have gone up to 10, of which three are females, and the rest are males

“In zoos, the birth of a female cub is rare. The entire medical team has worked relentlessly to make this breeding program successful,” said Bhattacharjee.
