The two-day Tyisam Winter Festival commenced with vibrant festivities in Baghmara, featuring cultural performances, music, talent shows, stalls, and ethnic food.
Chief Guest Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, inaugurated the event at Simsang Golden Beach, accompanied by Rakkam A. Sangma, Minister of Education.
Emphasising the festival’s significance for tourism and cultural promotion, chief guest Sangma praised the Chugan and Ruga dances, urging the youth to preserve their unique culture. He highlighted the pivotal role of festivals like Tyisam in promoting youth talent and showcasing local products.
Education Minister emphasised tourism’s role in regional economic growth, foreseeing improved road communication. He credited Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for schemes benefiting enterprising youth in the tourism sector.
Deputy Commissioner S. Awasthi highlighted South Garo Hills’ natural beauty and diverse offerings. Tyisam, a major festival, provided a platform to showcase the district’s best, featuring an Exhibition cum SHG Mela with 75 stalls displaying indigenous crafts, art, beverages, and cuisine.
This year’s Tyisam includes adventure sports like zip lining, trampolines, and hot air balloon rides. The inaugural ceremony also saw the distribution of certificates of appreciation and a cheque of Rs. 1,06,50,000 to 38 village organisations by the Chief Guest and dignitaries.
