ULFA-I releases video of alleged police spy, police deny claim

The alleged spy further said that he was recruited as a mole by the police to infiltrate the ULFA-I ranks and was given special training for the purpose

GUWAHATI:

The banned United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I), on April 26, released a video of an alleged Assam police spy, claiming that he was deployed by the security forces to snoop on the banned outfit’s Myanmar camp.

In the video, the detained person, identified as Sanjib Sarma, was seen confessing to be an agent of Assam Police, saying he had been put on a mission to secretly gather information on the outfit by joint commissioner of police (JCP), Guwahati, Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

Divulging information about his hometown, Sarma, said that he hails from Baihata Chariali, and his brother Apurba Kumar Sarma, who was a para-commando, was killed in an ambush by militants in Manipur some months back. The youth also claimed that Mahanta had told him that the ULFA-I was behind that ambush.

The alleged spy further said that he was recruited as a mole by the police to infiltrate the ULFA-I ranks and was given special training for the purpose.  Sarma further said that he was told by security forces to identify and assassinate the ULFA leaders behind the Manipur attack and was promised a reward of Rs 1 crore on completion of the mission by Mahanta.

Adding that the security forces were hatching a plan to bomb ULFA-I camps in 2023, Sarma said that he also was given a “special” code number to buy his release in case of any arrest by the security forces.

Reacting to the video, Joint commissioner Mahanta denied all the allegations made by the alleged spy and said that he can’t fathom why his name has been dragged into the matter. “We meet many people in our profession. Maybe when I was in the Kamrup district, I met him. But I don’t remember anything about him,” said Mahanta.

“The Guwahati City Police is not connected with the video. I do not know why they took my name. It will be found out. Right now, I do not want to say anything,” Mahanta further added.
