Union Cabinet approves naming of Greenfield Airport as Donyi Polo Airport

GUWAHATI: 

The Union Cabinet on November 2 approved the naming of Greenfield Airport at Hollongi, Itanagar as Donyi Polo Airport” as proposed by the State Cabinet of Arunachal Pradesh.

The resolution was passed by the Arunachal Pradesh government to name the airport ‘Donyi Polo Airport, which reflects the people’s reverence of the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo) to symbolize the traditions and rich cultural heritage of the state.

The Union government granted ‘In-principle’ approval for the development of Hollongi Greenfield Airport in January 2019. The project is being developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) with the help of the Central and the state government at a cost of Rs. 646 crores.

On August 4, the state cabinet chaired by Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu named the under-construction Greenfield Airport as Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar.

AAI’s newly built Hollongi greenfield airport is all set to be inaugurated soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited for the inauguration of the airport.

The airport is built in an area covering 685 acres at an estimated cost of Rs 648 crore.

The airport is suitable for the operations of Airbus-320 type of aircraft. The Donyi Polo airport can accommodate up to 300 passengers during peak hours with eight check-in counters.

It is energy-efficient and will run on renewable energy. The runway of the airport is 2300 metres long.
