SHILLONG:
The Dorbar Shnong of one of the villages in West Khasi Hills district, in collaboration with the police department, office of the DCPO Nongstoin and North East Network, on June 14, organised a rally to protest against increasing crimes against children – with reference to the recent case where a child was allegedly abused by one man.
The rally witnessed the participation of parents, young students and others, who took to the streets while carrying banners with big bold phrases to condemn the offence and shouted slogans, demanding justice for the victim and punishment for the offender.
Later, an awareness programme was held in the village on crime against women and children and informing people about POCSO Act and its applicability.
According to Phidarilin Uriah of North East Network Shillong, parents should spare time to talk to their children, to make them aware of certain gestures like good touch and bad touch.
Referring to the emerging threat on social and moral values with the advent of technology, she said that in this age where technology and internet have become part of our lifestyle, it is very important for parents to keep a tap on their child’s engagement on mobile phones.
Meanwhile. DCPO W Shabong said that the responsibility of curb and curtail such crimes should not only be the responsibility of the police and the government but it is for everyone to do their part – like teaching their children to be alert and not to easily put their trust on anyone and everyone, because usually, in many POSCO cases, the victim is known to the offender.
