SHILLONG:

After the success in the recently- concluded Meghalaya assembly elections, Voice of the People Party (VPP) has decided to put up candidates for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Lok Sabha polls slated next year.

Appealing to the people of the state to support the party’s candidates for the KHADC and Lok Sabha polls, VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said, “As of now the party has not decided on the names of the candidates to; the matter will be decided by the party in the appropriate time.”

Meanwhile, Myrboh also expresses sincerest appreciation and gratitude to all the supporters of VPP spread across the state.

“Your strong support has made a mark in the politics of Meghalaya when four of our candidates emerged victorious to represent the issues affecting the citizens of the state,” he stated.

Myrboh also said the support of the people to the party that stands for clean and principled politics and substantive democracy provides hope that the state of Meghalaya will one day be a model state in India – “a state that we will be proud of.”

VPP received unprecedented support in the recently-concluded assembly polls.

With 24,262 votes cast for VPP in the Mawlai constituency, candidate Brightstarwell Marbaniang’s rivals Teibor Pathaw (National People’s Party) and P T Sawkmie (United Democratic Party) were hung, drawn and quartered in the polls.

The shock victory has become symbolic of the people’s dissatisfaction with the existing political class.

The remaining three VPP legislators who will begin their terms are Ardent Miller Basaïawmoit (Nongkrem), Adelbert Nongrum (North Shillong) and Heaving Stone Kharpran (Mawryngkneng).
