WKH mine owner gets bail

SHILLONG:

A mine owner, Alfred Rongrin, in whose mine two labourers died recently and who surrendered before the police on Sunday, was granted bail on Monday.

Alfred Rongrin is a resident of Kyllon Mathei village in West Khasi Hills district.

He was absconding ever since the two labourers from Assam’s Boko district Sukur Ali and Ainudin Ali died in a coal quarry on February 16.

West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Herbert G Lyngdoh said that the section applied against the accused was bailable and therefore he was granted bail.

The police had applied section 41-A CrPC, which pertains to ‘Notice of appearance before police officer.’

According to the West Khasi Hills district police chief, the mine owner had admitted that he had illegally persuaded exploration of the mine with an intention of illegal coal mining operation. Lyngdoh said that section 4(1) of MMDR Act and the order of the National Green Tribunal was violated.
