Workshop on rights under Sixth Schedule held

A one-day workshop-cum-seminar on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of  Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and Sixth Schedule under the project ‘Strengthening women’s voices in land resource governance’ was held on Thursday at Trysem Hall DC office, Nongstoin.

Lyntiborn Marngar, Team Lead, Grassroot gave a presentation on the subject relating to UNDRIP with links to the Sixth Schedule so that indigenous people are being protected from exploitation and discrimination, to maintain and strengthen the indigenous culture and the indigenous people’s rights.

She added that Meghalaya tribes have not been recognised as indigenous people despite being a community having their own land, culture and tradition.

The event, organised by Grassroot, Shillong, was attended by government officials from all departments.
