Zeliangrong insurgent group signs pact with Centre, to abjure violence

GUWAHATI:

In a significant boost to the peace process in Manipur, an insurgent group Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) signed a Cessation of Operation Agreement with the Centre and Manipur governments in New Delhi on December 27.

“In yet another milestone, the Government of India & the Government of Manipur signed a ‘Cessation of Operation’ Agreement New Delhi with Zeliangrong United Front that has been active for more than a decade. This will be a significant boost to the peace process in Manipur,” Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said in a tweet.

“Representatives of ZUF agreed to abjure violence & join the peaceful democratic process as established by law of the land. The agreement includes rehabilitation and re-settlement of armed cadres. A Joint Monitoring Group will oversee enforcement of the agreed ground rules,” Singh tweeted.

“Truly happy to see that more insurgent groups have embraced peace by putting faith in the BJP Government led by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri @AmitShah ji,” Singh also tweeted.

The ZUF has been active for more than a decade.

This will be a significant boost to the peace process in Manipur.

This agreement was signed by senior officers of the Ministry of Home Affairs. the Manipur government and the representatives of ZUF in the presence of Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh.

Representatives of the armed group agreed to abjure violence and join the peaceful democratic process as established by law of the land.

The agreement provides for the rehabilitation and resettlement of the armed cadres.

A Joint Monitoring Group will be constituted to oversee the enforcement of the agreed ground rules.
