14 days judicial custody for HNLC bodyguard in Shillong

SHILLONG, MAR 11: A court in Shillong has sent arrested personal security officer (PSO) of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) Storgy Lyngdoh to 14 days judicial custody.

The militant, who had sneaked into the state from Bangladesh, was arrested from Mawlynrei on March 2.

Produced in court today, after completion of 10 days in police custody, he was given judicial custody by the court.

Police claim to have evidence that Lyngdoh was behind the widespread serving of demand notes to extort money from businessmen in Shillong on behalf of the HNLC and it had led to a fear psychosis among the business community.

“As per inputs he might have succeeded in scaring and threatening individuals to submit to the illegal extortion demands,” police stated.

At the time of his arrest, he was found to have in his possession a Bangladeshi SIM card.

In this connection, an FIR has been registered at Rynjah PS for further investigation into the matter, the SP said even as he added that as per the records of Meghalaya Police, Lyngdoh is involved in many criminal cases and was evading the due process of law.

Lyngdoh is an active member of the HNLC with close links to the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the HNLC. He was also the PSO of A. Hazarika @ Manbhalang Jyrwa, the previous Vice Chairman of HNLC, who resigned during the process of peace talks.
