3 Assam govt officials arrested on graft charges in separate cases

The anti-corruption team had laid the traps in government offices in Koliabar, Khanapara and Goalpara.

GUWAHATI:

Three government officials were arrested by the sleuths of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Directorate from Guwahati, Nagaon and Goalpara in three separate operations on March 3.

“The first trap was laid in the office of circle officer of Koliabar Revenue Circle in Nagaon district where lat mandal Pranjal Bora was caught red-handed at 11:30 am immediately after he accepted a bribe of Rs 2,000 as a bribe,” an official statement of Assam Police said.

“The bribe money has been recovered from Pranjal Bora and has been seized accordingly in presence of independent witnesses,” the statement said.

A case has been registered in ACB Police Station vide case No 7/2023 under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Pranjal Bora.

“Pranjal Bora had demanded Rs 3,000 as a bribe from the complainant in the name of processing and issuing land sale permission of the complainant. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached this directorate for taking necessary legal action against the above-mentioned public servant,” the statement also said.

“The second trap was laid in the office of the registrar of Co-operative Societies at Khanapara in Guwahati where a senior assistant Bidyadhar Das was caught red-handed at 1:10 pm immediately after he accepted a bribe of Rs 4,000 as part of the demanded bribe,” police said.

“The bribe money has been recovered from the possession of Bidyadhar Das and has been seized accordingly in presence of independent witnesses. A case has been registered in ACB Police Station vide No 8/2023 under Section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

“Bidyadhar Das had demanded Rs 5,000 as a bribe from the complainant in the name of processing the pension file of the complainant. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached this directorate for taking legal action against the above-mentioned public servant.

“The third trap was laid in the office of the block elementary education officer of Matia in Goalpara where Bajlul Basit Sarkar, BEEO was caught red-handed at 1:45 pm after he accepted demanded a bribe of Rs 1000 from the complainant,” police further said.

A case has been registered at ACB Police Station vide No 9/2023 under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against Bajlul Basit Sarkar. He had demanded Rs 1,000 as a bribe from the complainant who is a government teacher for signing the complainant’s bank loan (personal) documents.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the directorate for taking necessary legal action against the above-mentioned public servant.

“Sufficient evidence has been found against the three accused public servants and they have been subsequently arrested. Necessary legal follow-up action is underway in the 3 (three) ACB PS cases,” the statement added.
