6th schedule amendment reason for supporting NPP: Congress

“Taking into consideration the (proposed) amendment to the Sixth Schedule that is pending in Parliament as the main consideration, we have lent our support to the NPP-led EC,” Congress leader and Mylliem MDC Ronnie V Lyngdoh told reporters.

SHILLONG:

The opposition Congress, on June 19, said its decision to lend full support to the National People’s Party (NPP) to lead the new executive committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is because of the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution that is lying pending in Parliament.

“Taking into consideration the (proposed) amendment to the Sixth Schedule that is pending in Parliament as the main consideration, we have lent our support to the NPP-led EC,” Congress leader and Mylliem MDC Ronnie V Lyngdoh told reporters.

Lyngdoh, who is also Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said that the party does not want imposition of the Governor’s Rule in the KHADC with the amendment still pending in Parliament.

“Our apprehension is that the amendment if it is detrimental to the state we will oppose… We are more concerned about the ownership of our land, preserving and protecting our customary laws and usages,” he said.

When asked, Lyngdoh said the NPP, who is a major partner, has found it wise to disassociate itself from the UDP.

“This only speaks volume of the leadership of the CEM T Chyne. If everything was fine and everything was alright I don’t think it would come to this stage where the NPP no longer wants to work with the outgoing CEM,” he said.

On the UDP questioning the Congress’ decision to work with the NPP, which it considered as B-Team of the BJP, Lyngdoh downplayed the statement by stating: “The Assembly has a different mandate and the district council has a different mandate.”

Asked on the role of the Congress in the new EC, the Mylliem MDC said that the party has decided to leave the matter to the new CEM since that is his prerogative.WATCH:
