SHILLONG:
Awakening Indian Movement (AIM), on April 24, submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills district to ban gambling at melas (fairs) being held across the state.
Speaking to reporters, chairman of AIM B Marbaniang said that mela is a happy space filled with fun-packed entertainment and games of all sorts; however, the games that encourage gambling with money is detrimental and have a negative impact on the welfare of the people.
“We are not against organising melas in the state; however, we are against the act of gambling that is being held at the venues,” Marbaniang said.
He also reminded of the state’s unsuccessful attempt to legalise casinos in the past.
Accepting the memorandum, the DC assured to intervene and look into the matter.
