SHILLONG:
The state government has appointed former bureaucrat Bhalang Dhar as the new Lokayukta chief of Meghalaya.
Dhar will be administered the oath of affirmation by Governor Satya Pal Malik on January 31.
He was appointed as the chief of Lokayukta on January 17 and it was notified on January 27.
Earlier, in December last year, the Selection Committee for appointment of the chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta had recommended Dhar’s name for the post.
It may be mentioned that the post of Lokayukta Chief was vacant since May 31, last year after the first Lokayukta chief of the state, Pranoy Kumar Musahary’s term ended.
The Lokayukta is empowered to probe allegations of corruption against public functionaries such as the chief minister, deputy chief minister, ministers, speaker and deputy speaker of the Assembly, MLAs, besides government officials.
