GUWAHATI:
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on January 29, visited the residence of former student leader who was killed in a mob-lynching incident in upper Assam’s Jorhat town on November 29 last year.
Visting Animesh Bhuyan’s home at Khakandaguri village under Dergaon police station in Golaghat district on Saturday, Sarma interacted with his parents and offered his deep condolences before paying floral tributes to his portrait.
Soon after, Sarma took to a popular microblogging website and wrote, “Met parents of the former AASU leader of Jorhat, Animesh Bhuyan, whose unfortunate death had pained all of us. Offered my deep condolences & handed them a cheque of ₹5 lakh as a token. Police have framed charges against the accused & steps will be taken for fast-track trial of the case (sic).”
Informing that the Jorhat police has already filed chargesheet against 16 accused persons in the court of the chief judicial magistrate of Jorhat, the chief minister assured the family that the case would be tried by a fast-track court.
As many as 16 people have been accused in this case, including the prime accused Neeraj Das alias Kola Lora, who died in an accident while in police custody.
Animesh was attacked by a mob on November 29, 2021, after the vehicle in which he and two others were travelling allegedly hit Das’s father, who was riding a scooter. While Bhuyan died, his companions sustained severe injuries.
