“Ne-Yooooo, Ne-Yooooo”, the crowd chanted as the hour and the man arrived. The signature hat was there as was the undeniable charm. Ne-yo was about to unleash his magic, turning the night into a symphony of rhythm and energy. It was going to be So Sick!

The surging crowd had already had Hybrid Theory just before with the poignant tribute song to the iconic band Linkin Park that resonated deeply with them, evoking a wave of emotions.
One individual in the audience was visibly moved, on the verge of tears.

Overwhelmed with emotion, he shared, “I love Linkin Park, and being here, listening to their songs through the incredible tribute band, Hybrid Theory, feels like I’m on cloud 9. It brought back memories of Chester Bennington, and it’s truly special.”

The atmosphere became a poignant blend of nostalgia, admiration, and heartfelt connection as the music carried everyone on a profound journey down memory lane.

Commenting on the energy of the audience, Ne-yo said, “The energy and enthusiasm of the crowd are unparalleled. Shillong, with its cherry blossoms, provides the perfect canvas for artistic expression.”

The rescheduled opening night – thanks to cyclonic storm Midhili that washed out the scheduled opening on Friday –  on Saturday was a sonic explosion of talent. Before Ne-Yo and Hybrid Theory there were Rahul Rajkhowa, Meba Ofilia, Snow White, Banjop —each artiste left an indelible mark on the stage, setting the tone for an unforgettable weekend.

Much like major international festivals like Lollapalooza, the Cherry Blossom Festival boasted not one, not two, but three stages. The Main Stage took center stage, featuring a line-up that spanned the globe, with international and national acts dazzling the audience. The Cherry Blossom Stage showcased the best of local talent, while the DOME transformed into a pulsating night club set-up, adding a touch of nightlife to the festivities.

Banker Kharkongor, a versatile artiste renowned for his unique ability to capture the essence of a moment through song, enchanted the audience with his ode to the cherry blossom. Speaking to The Meghalayan, he expressed his elation at debuting in one of Meghalaya’s grandest festivals, stating, “I am thrilled to perform for the first time at one of Meghalaya’s premier events.”

Amidst the vibrant festival atmosphere, three enchanting figures with painted faces caught the eye. Two of them, Tenzin and Lee, had traveled from Arunachal Pradesh solely to witness Ne-Yo’s performance. Expressing their excitement, Tenzin shared, “We’re eager for Ne-Yo, especially for ‘So Sick’ and ‘Miss Independent.'” Lee added, “Our stay in Meghalaya has been amazing, and we look forward to returning.”

Amidst musical celebrations, a beauty pageant unfolded, featuring the titles of Mr Cherry Blossom and Miss Cherry Blossom. Fifteen contestants vied for each crown, creating a vibrant spectacle. Trebok Talang won the title of Mr Cherry Blossom, Aman Passah was the first runner-up and David Lalrinmawia clinched the title of 2nd Runner-up.

In the Miss Cherry Blossom category, the winner was Jollyne Lyngdoh Mawphlang, Lily Kharthangmaw won the 1st Runner-up title and

Hakani Phawa was announced the 2nd Runner-up.

These crowning moments added a touch of glamour and elegance to the festival, celebrating individuals who embody the spirit of the cherry blossom in their own unique ways.

Minister of Tourism, Paul Lyngdoh was there among the spectators. “The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival has become a symbol of unity and celebration, bringing people together to revel in the beauty of nature and the richness of our cultural diversity. Due to adverse weather circumstances, we had to cancel the Day-1, taking into care, the safety of the festival goers. But, as we lose out on no performances, we can frame it as- may be a day less in number, but a fervour greater in intensity.”
