CM launches Solar Mission to harness potential of alternate energy sources

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Sangma congratulated the Meghalaya Non-Conventional & Rural Energy Development Agency (MNREDA), and the Power Department on the launch of the chief minister’s solar mission.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on August 11, launched the solar mission programme in the state, an initiative aimed at utilising the solar power potential in Meghalaya to reduce dependency on hydel power.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Sangma congratulated the Meghalaya Non-Conventional & Rural Energy Development Agency (MNREDA), and the Power Department on the launch of the chief minister’s solar mission.

“In the past many years MNREDA was conceptualised to use and harness renewable energy and to be able to provide alternate solutions to the different requirements of energy. But what we noticed in the last many years was that the true potential of MNREDA, and Renewable energy was not being tapped in our state,” he said.

He said that there were different challenges such as unavailability of technology, solutions, services and accessibility that were hurdles in the state solar power generation potential.

He said today the state will see a huge turning point in the actual utility and optimisation of MNREDA as an organisation, and hence the day is very important for the organisation and the state as the power and energy from the sun can be harnessed in a better manner for the benefit of the citizens of the state.

“Keeping all the challenges we faced in the last many years; we have decided to come up with the CM Solar Mission. Now a lot of you may be thinking what is new in it as there are already solar panels being installed, solar lights being installed, different solar powered heaters being given and it has not worked out. But what we have done differently this time is to ensure we look at all the shortcomings of the past, of the challenges, and we try to improve on that,” he said.
