CM takes stock of landslide-hit areas in Mawsynram; Central team to visit

The Ministry of Home Affairs said an Inter-Ministerial Central Team will visit the flood-affected areas to assess the damages.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on June 20, visited the landslide-hit areas of Dagar and Kynmynsaw under Mawsynram Block in East Khasi Hills and met with families of those who died.

In a landslide at Dangar, 5 people had lost their lives including 4 minor children, and at Kynmynsaw a husband wife duo lost their lives in landslides, leaving behind three children.

During his visit to the area, the chief minister handed over sanction letters of financial assistance to the next of kin of the deceased. He also met with village leaders and assured all assistances to the affected areas.

He also assured them that the government is working to ensure that electricity and mobile connectivity is restored in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), shocked by the deteriorating condition in flood and landslide affected Meghalaya and Assam, said on June 20 that an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) will visit the flood-affected areas of both states to assess the damages.

The development took place after Union Home Minister Amit Shah had a talk with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma over the prevailing situation in both the states.

A senior official in the Home Ministry said that Shah has expressed concern over the prevailing situation of both the states.

“Spoke to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the situation in parts of both states in the wake of heavy rainfall and flooding. The Modi government stands firmly with the people of Assam and Meghalaya in this hour of need,” said Shah.

Accordingly, an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) will visit the flood-affected areas of Assam and Meghalaya to assess the damages.

Earlier, one such central team visited the affected areas of Assam from 26 May 26 to 29 to assess the situation.
