Dipamoni Deka from Assam won gold in the 5,000-metre race at the four-day inaugural National Open Masters Athletics Championship organised by the Athletics Federation of India at Swarnim Gujarat Sports University from June 16 to 19.
Hailing from Udmari village in Darrang district, Dipamoni had earlier won gold in the 800-metre race in North East Open Masters Athletics Championships at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati from March 24 to 28.
Apart from that, Dipamoni has also won several gold, silver and bronze medals in several national and international championships.
As many as 16 Indian athletes (10 of them in the women categories) had registered for the four-day inaugural National Open Masters Athletics Championship.
Apart from this, “inaugural” records were recorded in 100 metre hurdles (which replaces 80 m hurdles) in many categories, as also in 3,000 metre race walk.
The major highlight of the above competitions was the performance of 105-year-old Ram Bai from Haryana. She overtook Man Kaur’s record in women’s 100+ age group by setting new standards in 100 metre (45.40 secs) and 200 metre (1 min 52.17 secs) sprint races.
