CM to lead state-level committee to tackle drug menace: Paul Lyngdoh

In an effort to combat drug trafficking and address the rampant drug-related issues in Meghalaya, a meeting, aimed at tackling the drug menace effectively, was held with key stakeholders, Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh informed on Tuesday.

Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh informed on October 17 that a state-level committee, is to be headed by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, in order to focus on immediate measures and responses required to combat drug trafficking in the state.

In an effort to combat drug trafficking and address the rampant drug-related issues in Meghalaya, a meeting, aimed at tackling the drug menace effectively, was held with key stakeholders, Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh informed on Tuesday.

The gathering, which followed a recent meeting with faith leaders, delved into the concerns of the community at the Dorbarshnongs, particularly focusing on the West Shillong Constituency known for its high incidence of trafficking hotspots.

During the meeting, a plethora of insights and concerns were shared, shedding light on the challenges faced by the Dorbars when reporting or assisting law enforcement in apprehending offenders involved in drug trafficking.

Several significant decisions were reached during this meeting. Firstly, there was a consensus on the critical need to involve and engage the Dorbars sustainably, aligning with the vision outlined in the dream mission statement that emphasizes community engagement.

Furthermore, it was determined that these interactions would be regular, ensuring ongoing dialogue and a steady flow of communication. Various pressing issues were identified, such as the challenges witnesses face in court appearances, leading to proposed amendments and rules under the Narcotic-Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act(NDPS) Act. The objective is to frame rules that facilitate community participation in the battle against drug-related challenges.

Overall, this meeting underscored the community’s role and commitment to combating drug issues collectively, with a strategic plan for continued collaboration and action, the minister concluded.
