Congress assesses post-election scenario in Garo Hills after defeat

Deborah Marak shared insights into the party's internal assessment, stating, 'We are reviewing the functioning of all our block and district committees to see where we stand and how to take forward the party.'

TURA:

The working President of Congress, Deborah C Marak, and MLA from Garo Hills, Saleng A Sangma, conducted a crucial meeting in a bid to evaluate and strategise the party’s standing after a startling defeat in the March assembly elections of the state at the Tura Congress Bhawan on October 3, involving party functionaries.

Deborah Marak shared insights into the party’s internal assessment, stating, ‘We are reviewing the functioning of all our block and district committees to see where we stand and how to take forward the party.’

Despite recent electoral setbacks, Saleng Sangma emphasised that the Congress continues to be a formidable force in the state. He acknowledged the challenges the party has faced during the past five years, often transitioning from a ruling party to the opposition benches.

Deborah Marak further reiterated the party’s resilience, highlighting their continued influence in the state. She paid tribute to the party workers who remained loyal to the Congress even as key leaders, including Mukul Sangma, shifted allegiance to the Trinamool Congress.

Looking ahead, the party is gearing up for the upcoming MP elections and GHADC (Garo Hills Autonomous District Council) polls. Deborah Marak expressed her readiness to make efforts to reintegrate leaders like Mukul Sangma and others back into the Congress fold from the Trinamool Congress. However, she emphasised that this decision would be subject to the approval of the Congress high command.
