Consumers owe about Rs 300 crore in dues to MeECL: Sanjay Goyal

“We are trying to work around it, how much of those is recoverable, and how much of it can be recovered through legal course,” Goyal informed.

SHILLONG:

Chairman-cum-Managing Director of MeECL Sanjay Goyal, on June 13, informed that industrial and domestic consumers owe about Rs 300 crore to the MeECL, and the government is trying to recover them.

“The combined dues from commercial and domestic consumers stands at about Rs 300 crore. This includes even those who have gone to NCLT, and disputed consumers,” Goyal told media persons.

Goyal said that dues have accumulated over a long period of time, and they are not just of recent times.

“We are trying to work around it, how much of those is recoverable, and how much of it can be recovered through legal course,” Goyal informed.

He informed that the corporation had recently issued letters to various mobile companies for failing to clear their power dues.

“They (mobile companies) have not paid their dues for their mobile towers. The same company is running towers in different parts of the state but not paying in certain places. So we have written to them that we will disconnect all if they don’t make the payments for all towers,” Goyal told reporters.

“We are trying to find out who are the consumers who are in a position to pay and maybe intentionally are not paying. So we are targeting (such consumers who have the capacity to pay but they are not paying) in the first phase,” he added.

According to him, watch is also on consumers who have outstanding dues of more than Rs 1 lakh and have not paid in the last three to six months.
