JOWAI:
District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills District, BS Sohliya, on March 2 imposed curfew in Sahsniang village under Mowkaiaw constituency after violence erupted following the declaration of results for the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election.
As per reports, a group of supporters allegedly belonging to the National People’s Party (NPP) attacked several houses and a security force vehicle.
In a bid to curtail the spread of violence, authorities decided to impose curfew in the area.
The attackers are said to have used stones and machetes to damage property as well as threaten supporters of other political parties, primarily of the United Democratic Party (UDP), which won the Mowkaiaw seat in the recent election.
Informing The Meghalayan, a source said, “The incident began at around 4 pm when a group of people started roaming around the village, shouting and pelting stones at houses. They then went on to smash wooden posts with machetes and attacked a security force vehicle before threatening supporters of the UDP.”
