Domestic workers’ union seeks compulsory registration, fixed minimum wages

The All Meghalaya Domestic Workers’ Union, on June 14, requested the government to start the compulsory registration of all domestic workers and to fix minimum wages for all domestic workers.

Addressing a press conference in Shillong, board member of the union Elbina Nongkhlaw informed that there are over 3000 members of the union who felt that the government should have a compulsory registration of the domestic workers as there are many that are not part of the union.

“The domestic workers fall under the unorganised sector, there should be schemes for the domestic workers. The pay that we are getting is not enough for us and there is no social security,” she said.
