Education top priority for NCP in 2023 polls

SHILLONG:

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Saleng Sangma has said that the party will prioritise education, sports, health, transport and communication in the upcoming assembly polls.

Speaking on the issue of non-availability of seats in the higher secondary and undergraduate level, Sangma said that despite the setting up of new schools and colleges, they are not enough to accommodate the students passing out every year.

Sangma said that the non-availability of seats in the state for their own students hampers the prospects of students from poor backgrounds.

“Sincerity should be there while setting up new educational institutions,” the Gambegre MLA said.

On the issue of unemployment, he said that many indigenous youths are not engaged in entrepreneurship, adding that tribal youths should be trained in entrepreneurship and there should be hand-holding to ensure success.

Sharing his thoughts on the All India Trinamool Congress’ (AITC) frequent attacks on the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) on the issue of corruption, the NCP legislator said that it is the nature of the opposition to criticise the government.

“It is the nature of any opposition to be aggressive and right now the AITC is campaigning all over Meghalaya,” the NCP legislator said.

He said that the AITC is creating a platform for the party’s candidates who will be contesting from the party.

He said that the opposition’s job is to criticise the ruling dispensation.

When asked if aggressiveness on the part of the AITC will translate into wins for the party, he said one cannot predict anything but depends on “how and what” people will choose.

Sangma also said that nobody, not even the AITC, can pinpoint that the MDA government is corrupt.
