Ri Bhoi schools receive book donations

Two schools in Ri Bhoi received book donations with the concept of ‘Hanging Library’ to attract the interest of students toward books and inculcate in them the habit of regular reading.

Under the concept of the ‘Hanging Library’, books were hung from the walls, making them easily visible and accessible for the students.

The initiative was taken under the Aspirational District Collaborative, a joint initiative of Piramal Foundation with NITI Aayog, a drive to establish and functionalise library in selected schools in Ri Bhoi district.

The  event kicked off with the inauguration of a library at St Joseph Higher Secondary School on August 6 and at Nongbah Myrdon Secondary School, Umden, on Friday. The event marked the mobilization and contribution of 1000 books by SiQSA Foundation, a partner NGO in Aspirational District Collaborative in Ri Bhoi, to replenish and strengthen the libraries of the two schools.

On the August 6 inauguration, 500 books were donated to St Joseph Secondary school at Umden village under Umling block. The event was atteneded by Arpit Upadhayaya, Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi. While addressing the audience, Upadhyaya emphasised the importance of reading saying that, ‘reading impacts our personality and our thought process’ and went on to encouraged students to grab every opportunity to read.

The event was also attended by members of Piramal Foundation, representatives from partner NGOs, teachers and the headmen of Umden.

The event culminated with the student’s enthusiastic music and folk dance performances.

On Friday, the remaining 500 books were donated to Nongbah Myrdon Secondary school where the school library was inaugurated.
