SHILLONG:
The Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), on July 27, called upon the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniaid Sing Syiem, seeking his serious intervention to strengthen the Dorbar Shnong to monitor the unchecked entry and settlement of non-tribals in the state.
FKJGP president Dundee Khongsit said that there are public representatives who shy away from speaking about issues that concern the indigenous communities and that these MLAs mostly represent those constituencies where there is a mixed population, for fear of losing votes.
Recently, the KHADC decided to strengthen the local dorbars to tackle the influx of illegal immigrants into the state, adding that over the past few years, Meghalaya has been marred by the unchecked entry of such immigrants, to the extent that many of them were even given the right to vote, just after a few months of their settlement.
“In Shillong alone, there are four constituencies where the population of non-locals is more than that of the locals, and this is a dangerous trend,” Khongsit said.
The FKJGP has also raised the issue of drug abuse in the state and called upon the district council to empower the dorbar shnong, to tackle this menace.
