Food safety officer arrested in Assam in graft charge

Karzee allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh to issue an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) license to a person who subsequently complained to the police about the officer

GUWAHATI:

Nagaon Police arrested an official of the food safety department after he was caught taking bribe from a person red-handed.

Identified as Birinchi Kumar Karzee, the person is a designated food safety officer in the department.

According a statement issued by the police, Karzee allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh to issue an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) license to a person who subsequently complained to the police about the officer.

On receiving the complaint, a team of Nagaon Police, accompanied by a detective of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing, laid a trap and accordingly Karzee was caught red-handed, the statement said.

Meanwhile, a vide case, ACB PS case No 10/2022, under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered against Karjee in this regard.

The tainted money amounting to Rs 10,000 was recovered from the possession of Karzee in the presence of independent witnesses as per procedure.

Notably, Karzee is the food safety officer for Nagaon, Hojai, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts.

Soon after his arrest, simultaneous searches were conducted in Kamakhya Lodge, Nagaon and also in his residence at Juripar, Guwahati. During the search, Rs 9,66,500 was recovered along with incriminating documents, the statement added.
