SHILLONG:
Former technocrat Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) during a function held at Madan Shad, Mawphlang, on January 12, and will be the party’s candidate from Mawphlang constituency in the upcoming Assembly polls.
The retired Chief Engineer of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) was welcomed to the party fold by its president Metbah Lyngdoh.
On the occasion, leaders from various political parties of Mawphlang constituency also joined the UDP.
It may be mentioned that in the 2018 election, former Public Health Engineering, S.K. Sunn won as an independent candidate. Sunn later was inducted as an associate member of the UDP.
After Sunn’s demise in September 2021, his son Eugeneson Lyngdoh contested on a UDP ticket and won. However, Lyngdoh decided not to run for the upcoming polls citing personal reasons.
It may be mentioned that the UDP has so far released the names of 35 candidates for the upcoming assembly polls.
Next week the party will likely induct five sitting MLAs from various parties who will contest from the UDP in the upcoming assembly polls.
Others who were present during the induction programme included UDP General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), MDC, Mitchell Wankhar, and Mawphlang MLA Eugeneson Lyngdoh.
