Govt employees to learn how to speak Kokborok online

Education minister Ratan Lal Nath inaugurated an online speaking course for government employees.

Agartala:

In a bid to promote the Kokborok language, the state introduced an online speaking course for its employees who are not familiar with the language. On January 31, education minister Ratan Lal Nath inaugurated the course at the Shiksha Bhawan.

Terming it as a ‘landmark’ step, Nath said the government has always encouraged people to speak the language and taken various steps to develop it as well. “This initiative has been taken to make Kokborok more accessible to the non-Kokborok speaking people of the state,” he said. Kokborok is the most widely spoken lingua franca of the indigenous people of Tripura.

In the first batch, 100 government employees from eight districts will get the opportunity to learn the language online, he said.

The minister also informed that Tripura Civil Service and IAS officers will also be present as trainers and resource persons, and training will take place on Sundays, second, and the fourth Saturday of every month. The first batch of training will be completed in three months and two weeks.

The education minister said the government has introduced Kokborok as a subject in 116 schools from primary to higher secondary level.

He also informed that not just Kokborok, the government has also taken various initiatives for the development of other indigenous languages like Kuki, Garo, Mizo, Halam, Chakma, Bishnupriya, and Manipuri in the state.
