SHILLONG:

Four out of five suspended Congress MLAs have been appointed as co-chairmen in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.

A notification issued by Principal Secretary in-charge Power department P Shakil Ahammed on February 18 said that Mawlai legislator PT Sawkmie and West Shillong legislator Mohendro Rapsang have been appointed as co-chairmen of the MNREDA.

Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem was also appointed as co-chairman of Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA Kimfa Marbaniang as co-chairman of Meghalaya Government Construction Company (MGCC).

The appointment of four MLAs is in A+ category, which includes perks and facilities.

Meanwhile, the state government is yet to reveal the assignment given to Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader and East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh.

The five MLAs have been suspended by the Congress, which termed the support to a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed government as “anti-party”. The party has given them 10 days to reply to the show cause notice served on them.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had on Thursday praised the five MLAs being “constructive” and “productive” and said the government would utilize their services.

Ex-MLAs Limison D Sangma and Billykid A Sangma were appointed as the co-chairmen of Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB). Raju Azad was appointed as the member of the MSPB.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president PN Syiem said that the political situation in the state right now is dynamic and the appointment of the four Congress legislators to the various corporations in the government cannot be construed as leaving the party.

“In politics anything can change overnight,” Syiem told The Meghalayan.

The MPCC working president also said that the Congress is a national party and it is organised till the block level and any action taken against them will have to be taken with the approval of each and every party worker.

“We have to understand the mind of the party workers at the block level,” Syiem added.
