Two Meghalaya cattle smugglers held in Assam’s Raha

GUWAHATI:

Assam police arrested two persons from Meghalaya for smuggling 28 cattle heads from Raha, Assam’s Nagaon district, on the night of February 17. The cattle heads were rescued, the police said.

Hailing from Jowai district, both the persons, identified as Arki Dkhar (21) and Soniki Tariang (20), are from Mobakhon and Mynhngat, respectively. The police also seized a truck (AS 01 JC 9256) from their possession.

“Acting on specific inputs that cows are being transported from Sivasagar to Byrnihat, we engaged two police teams to nab the culprits. Their vehicle was intercepted at Raha’s Saragaon on the National Highway. However, some people who were on another vehicle managed to escape from the spot,” said the officer-in-charge of Raha Police Station, Hrishikesh Hazarika.

The rescued cows were sent to a Gaushala in Nagaon, the police added.

The transportation of cattle has been banned in Assam after the passage of the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021.
