Govt looking at diff models for establishment of Shillong Medical College

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that two models are being looked at for establishing the medical facility, one being the Private-Public Partnership (PPP) model, and the other on utilising the available resources.

SHILLONG:

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, on June 19, said the government is looking at different models for the establishment and upkeep of the much-delayed Shillong Medical College (SMC).

She said that two models are being looked at for establishing the medical facility, one being the Private-Public Partnership (PPP) model, and the other on utilising the available resources.

Briefing media persons, Lyngdoh informed that the government is preparing a note to be presented before the cabinet on the Shillong Medical College, and still deliberating on the model.

“Certain ideas are now being mooted; there are two versions of these ideas – one is a complete Private-Public Partnership (PPP) model, and the other is to initiate some kind of coordination between available services of the government within either Shillong, or somewhere near the city of Shillong,” Lyngdoh said.

Informing that the second option at the disposal of the government for SMC is to utilise the facilities of the Civil Hospital, the Ganesh Das Hospital, the Red Chest Hospital, Lyngdoh said,” Whether or not we can actually convert these institutions into learning institutions, wherein a medical college can actually emerge out of the available facilities that we have in the state that is one thing being pondered upon,” she said.

The health minister also informed that as far as the Khasi Jaintia Hills region is concerned, the government is also looking at the idea of partnering with universities that are functioning well in the state, likely within the Ri Bhoi district.

Lyngdoh also gave an update on the Tura Medical College stating that the project is progressing well, and the government will speed up the facilities that are to be put in place to make the college fully functional.
