Govt pursuing to include Khasi in Eighth Schedule: Dy CM

SHILLONG:

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, on July 25, said that said the government is pursuing the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian constitution with the Centre.

Speaking at the release of a book Ka Lapalang Ha Ri War by Dr Bashida Massar from the department of Zoology, St. Anthony’s College, Tynsong said, “We are following it up with the Centre and we are getting numerous documents to support and justify the need to include Khasi in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.”

The deputy Chief Minster, however, informed that it will not be possible for the legislators to speak in their mother tongue in this session despite the cabinet clearing the move. “It will be done from next year as required technology needs to be installed and interpreters too have to be assigned for the purpose,” said Tynsong.

Lauding the book, the cabinet minister hailed it as a “good read”. “The more you read it, it will expand your knowledge.  This is the kind of book that should be included in State Central Library,” he said.

Tynsong also added that when the book is included in the library, the posterity will be inspired to write similar meaningful books.
