GVK-EMRI staff calls off agitation

SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) Workers Union (MEMRIWU), on August 3, called off their agitation after the news came to light that the government has terminated its contract with the GVK to run the 108 emergency services.

Earlier in the day, member of the union had met with the East Khasi Hill Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo to discuss their demands and the decision to call off the protest came after the meeting.

MEMRIWU publicity secretary, Joseph Pyngrope, said that the meeting with the Deputy Commissioner was fruitful and therefore they called off their agitation and employees of the 108 emergency services will resume duty immediately.

Pyngrope also informed that until a new company to run the emergency services is not finalised, the government will be running the emergency services operation.

Notably, the employees of the 108 emergency services, under the banner of MEMRIWU, were staging an indefinite strike since July 18 demanding the termination of the contract signed with the GVK company.

Pyngrope said that with the government running the 108 emergency services on its own, Rs 12 crore, which has to be given to the company, can be saved.
