HNLC demand notice being probed, outfit denies allegations: DIG

The outfit, on the other hand, has washed its hands on the matter and denied having links with a person who claimed to belong to the HNLC and issuing demand notes in its name.

SHILLONG:

Days after an HNLC (Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council) extortion demand notice surfaced on social media, Deputy Inspector General of Police (ER), Meghalaya, Davis Marak informed that the matter is being investigated.

The outfit, on the other hand, has washed its hands on the matter and denied having links with a person who claimed to belong to the HNLC and issuing demand notes in its name.

“It is true that recently one demand note has surfaced and it is circulating on social media. The person whose name came out has denied his involvement. In fact, he came to police headquarters yesterday and denied it. So, we are further inquiring if the matter is genuine or if somebody else used his name,” Marak said.

When apprised about the HNLC denying any involvement in serving the demand notice, he said that police cannot rule out if the person was involved as the matter is under investigation.

“Whether these are genuine HNLC demand notes, or somebody else is using the outfit’s name and taking advantage of the situation has to be probed,” he said.

When asked about HNLC’s statement, calling for aid and donation, the top cop said that any donation or contribution to an unlawful association will be subject to action as per law.

On the question that 100 demand notices have been served by the outfit to the people across Khasi and Jaintia Hills, he said that police have got such information but unfortunately, nobody has come forward to file an FIR.
