HNYM seeks KHADC’s intervention in land sale

Speaking to reporters after meeting the members of the HNYM, KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that as per rules the district council will send a show cause notice to the Syiem of Raid Marwet.

SHILLONG/NONGPOH:

After reports surfaced of the Syiem of Raid Marwet, Arun Ken Syiem, along with other traditional heads including Garo headmen being allegedly involved in selling off land to people from outside the state, the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) on July 4 took up the matter with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Speaking to reporters after meeting the members of the HNYM, KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that as per rules the district council will send a show cause notice to the Syiem of Raid Marwet.

“We will ask him to clarify whether these allegations against him are true and only after that we can go forward,” Syiem told reporters.

The CEM also said that the deputy CEM in-charge Elaka, P N Syiem has been asked to examine the claims of the Syiem of Raid Marwet selling off land to outsiders before initiating an inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, the HNYM president, Louis Dohtdong, informed that the group has given the council seven days  to act on the matter.

Raid Marwet Syiem refutes allegations

Syiem Raid Aron Ken Syiem responded to the recent statements by HNYM president Louis Dohtdong accusing the Paiem (Syiem) of Raid Marwet of selling land to non-tribals and allowing a Garo individual to become a headman in Raid Marwet.

Syiem said the repetitive remarks could mislead the public and create  communal division. He emphasised that they do not wish to create misunderstandings among the peaceful public of Raid Marwet.

Furthermore, the documents suggesting the involvement of the Syiem of Raid Marwet in selling land to non-tribals since 2004 were incorrect. The Syiem clarified that he assumed the position as Syiem of Raid Marwet since the year of 2007, and the land document that was given to non-tribals was only to those who had settled in Meghalaya since 1965 and no  land was granted to new settlers.
