Dozens of timber logs valued several lakhs have been confiscated from an illegal saw mill that was operating inside a forest in Selsella area of West Garo Hills on Wednesday.
The seizure took place in Dokagre village after members of several Garo social organisations jointly raided the site with teams of state forest department personnel.
Members of the A’chik Association for Protection of Environment (AAPE), Federation for A’chik Freedom (FAF) and Niksamso Garo community social organisations jointly raided the illegal saw mill with support from the State Forest department personnel and recovered the huge consignment of illegal timber which had led to destruction of vast tracts of forests in the region.
Garo Hills is reeling under a major water crisis and extreme dry spells due to heatwave and the destruction of forests is further leading to drying up of water bodies.
