NONGPOH:
The Meghalaya Pig Farmers’ Association has asked the state to control the supply of pig from outside the state to curb the spread of the African Swine Flu (ASF) in the state.
In a memorandum submitted to Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department minister AL Hek, the association sought help from the state government in relation to several issues on pig farming and its supply in the state.
In the memorandum, the association stated that the state government has to cease or control import of pig from other states to prevent the spread of ASF in the state and also highlighted the need for a proper market for selling pigs.
They also asked the state government to recognise the association to help small farmers buy livestock at an affordable price.
Apart from the memorandum, the association also requested the minister for government support to run the proposed market so that the association can help other rearers in term of medical treatment and food for their livestock.
In reply to their demand, Hek said that the government currently does not have land for the market but promised to look into their request and help them with schemes.
The association also suggested training for farmers in terms of modern techniques so that they can reap more benefits from pig farming.
