HYC advocates teachers’ pension, calls for caution on NCERT textbook implementation

'Despite teachers dedicating 30 years of service, they currently lack similar provisions, raising questions about their well-being during retirement,' Synrem said.

SHILLONG:

HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem reiterated the necessity of social security measures for teachers in Meghalaya on December 18, as the state remembers U Soso Tham, the Khasi poet from Meghalaya’s Sohra, on his 83rd death anniversary; a community figure acknowledged for his contributions as a poet, writer, and visionary.

Synrem expressed concern over the lack of social security for teachers, highlighting the contrast with elected officials who, after serving for two years in the legislative assembly, receive pensions.

‘Despite teachers dedicating 30 years of service, they currently lack similar provisions, raising questions about their well-being during retirement,’ he said.

The HYC President called on the Meghalaya government to formulate and implement a policy ensuring teachers with over 30 years of service receive pension or equivalent security. This appeal stems from the acknowledgment of the contributions teachers make to the education system and the future of students.

In addition to the plea for social security, Synrem talked about the potential incorporation of NCERT textbooks into Meghalaya’s curriculum. He cautioned against hastily implementing these textbooks without a thorough understanding of potential repercussions.

Synrem urged the government to conduct a comprehensive study to evaluate the impact of introducing NCERT textbooks on students. He underlined the importance of ensuring these textbooks preserve the history and cultural identity of the local community.

The HYC President stressed that textbooks should not overlook the history and contributions of Meghalaya’s people, to exercise caution and conduct a thorough study before deciding on the implementation of NCERT textbooks.

Synrem highlighted the responsibility of the government to preserve and impart the unique history of the community to future generations through education.
