NONGPOH:
HYC Ri Bhoi District, under the leadership of General Secretary Tonny Shylla, responded swiftly to address a situation near USTM College that had allegedly transformed into a gathering point for alcohol, cigarettes, and cannabis consumption.
Upon receiving complaints from the public, the members conducted inspections and discovered that both USTM students and youth from outside were using the area for drinking and smoking. The organisation, concerned about the negative impact on moral standards, intervened immediately, cautioning the youth against turning the place into a substance use hotspot.
Speaking to the media, Shylla conveyed the organisation’s disapproval of the offensive public behaviour involving alcohol and cigarette consumption. He expressed particular concern about the potential involvement of drugs in the area, underscoring the detrimental effects of such activities on society.
Shylla highlighted that the inspection was prompted by numerous complaints from residents regarding the behavior of the youth in the area. He urged local leaders, women’s organisations, youth groups, and the police to conduct regular checks to prevent the emergence of substance-related activities that tarnish societal values and set a negative example for young children.
